I learned about cochineal years ago at Seattle's Pacific Science Center. It is a bug they is used as a nontoxic food coloring! (Commonly referred to as a beetle, but is not and is in fact a scale insect). The bodies of female cochineal bugs are dried, ground and heated, and the colored powder is filtered out.

Shortly after learning this I noticed it on a juice drink label. It's listed as cochineal or carmine on ingredient labels (mandatory since 2006). Read about this at Interesting Thing of the Day. I'm not lying! :)

Anyway, it doesn't bother me. It's not very Fear Factor at all. :)
